FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
IS SPORT FOR ALL? ? ?
DISABILITY IN THE 21st CENTURY
The C. F. P.
D. believes that ALL disabled people have the right to be treated normally
[with equal rights and privileges] in this modern age. This document attempts
to address briefly the need for ALL VENUES AND FACILITIES to be readily
accessible to ALL and provide the environment necessary for the creation
of the right atmosphere that will encourage the development of all sports.
We ask all persons and organisations involved with sport and recreational
activities to give the following suggestions serious consideration. We
are fully aware of the expense involved! However we believe that in a
modern, fair and democratic society, where a policy of EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
is proclaimed nationally by all agencies in Sport and Government, NO DISCRIMINATION
should exist, against any individual, because they happen to have a disability
of any kind.
1. (a) Access to buildings and facilities should be integrated into their
basic design; access should be permanent [not temporary or add on].
(b) Induction loops fitted as standard for those with hearing impairment
and those with visual impairment must be fully catered for, at all venues.
2. Organisations should provide integrated disability areas and facilities
designed with full adequate provision for disabled players, officials
and supporters - SPORT IS FOR ALL!
3. Toilet facilities will be sited within those areas designated for Men
and Ladies, NOT UNISEX AND NOT DETACHED from the "normal" user
areas. This will apply to picnic areas and other Public venues. Alternate
sex carers must be accommodated, by screening the toilet nearest to the
entrance from the main facility.
4. All Cricket and, other sporting clubs and facilities, will be designed
for all users - the young, the old, the able and the disabled; men women
and children alike, who enjoy any mainstream sporting activity.
5. Wheelchair dependent [and some physically disabled] players, officials
and supporters, see and operate at a much lower eye level than the able
- bodied. Provision must be made so that they have access to all
facilities independently, e.g. drinks, food, telephones, vending machines
etc. Unaided, a wheelchair bound or severely disabled person, needs more
space to manoeuvre or just turn around [as much as 6 to 8 feet opposed
to the 2 feet approx. required by the able bodied]. Toilets, Showers,
Changing rooms, Restaurants, Bars and Lounges, must have about three or
more times the space to both sit and manoeuvre in certain areas
6. ALL PLAYERS [including those with a disability], should have EQUAL
OPPORTUNITY to play at club level and be allowed [and encouraged] to develop
from Club, to County, to Area, to National and International standards
of competition. They have the right to expect access to and use of all
those facilities available TO THE NON - DISABLED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.
League cricket
at Club level is essential for all progressive clubs and priority should
be given to ensure Cricket for the Disabled is developed in this way.
Teams of Disabled Cricketers should tour at home and abroad to compete
at Club County and National levels.
A
World Cup Competition Should Be A Reality!!
